Keeping up with Daniel(“Danny”)DeTerra can be a challenge. In the warm weather months, the President and Owner of DeTerra Landscape Design may be designing and creating a graceful walkway leading to a customer’s front entryway, or may be installing multiple zones of an irrigation system to keep a lawn beautiful and lush through the scorching summer months. In the winter months he could be out tackling the snow and ice that Mother Nature drops on our local homes and businesses.

Having worked in the plant, nursery and landscaping industry since he was 11, Danny is passionate about designing and caring for landscapes and hardscapes in the SouthCoast area. A year-round business, DeTerra Landscape Design provides residential and commercial customers with landscape design and property maintenance.

Well, we recently caught up with the owner of this successful, SouthCoast business, to ask Danny a little about DeTerra Landscape Design.

Danny, tell us about your business and some of the products and services that you offer.

Well, we offer landscape design, installation and maintenance.  We also install walks, patios and stone walls. Another area that is very popular for local residential and business customers is the installation and repair of irrigation systems. And of course, we are always offering ongoing property maintenance for homeowners and business clients.

Tell us a little bit about why you established your business or how you got into it.

I’ve been in the landscape industry for over 35 years. I stared working in the plant, nursery and landscape industry when I was 11 years old.  I am a graduate of Bristol County Agricultural High School and I have always been passionate about designing and caring for landscapes and hardscapes.

What are some of the challenges you face as a small business owner?

Being an owner can be a challenge at times because I like to oversee every project so I can give my customers the highest quality service and product. To me help me accomplish this, I assign a team leader to every crew and properly train all of my staff before sending them out into the field. But, one of the things I like most about being my own business owner is that I can control my own destiny.

How has Phillips Garcia Law helped your business in the past?

They helped me with a very difficult collection issue that I had in the past. Phillips & Garcia also filed the necessary paperwork and set up my S-corp, DeTerra Landscape Design, Inc.

Many homeowners like to tackle projects on their own or with some assistance from contractors. Do you welcome “do it yourselfers” like that?

We have had many customers work along  with us on their properties. Many companies may feel uncomfortable with this but I welcome it.  For may people their yards are a labor of love but may be too much for them to handle. It’s great to see them get so invested in the project.

Do you cater to residential jobs, commercial jobs or both?

We do a mix of residential and commercial jobs.  We are also operating in the capacity of Caretaker of Salter’s Point in South Dartmouth, MA where we are responsible for maintaining the golf course, tennis courts and  beaches in addition to an assortment of repairs and maintenance of the homes.
